I have always been fascinated by the phenomena of organizational climate.  Before I became an elementary school principal, I began a deep-dive into school and organizational climate as a doctoral student at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon.

In fact, I went around and around with one of my most respected professors, Dr. Sue Feldman, about whether or not buildings can have "feelings" and thus result in a tangible examination of "organizational climate and culture."

Once I became the proud principal of Prescott Elementary, I set out ambitiously to prove my theory that we could create a non-compliance based campus...

• Where Indigenous, Black and Brown boys are not disparately harmed by our behavior management systems;

• Where teachers are not at war with their administrator;

• Where educational assistants and support staff feel valued and respected; and

• Where families are welcomed and embraced.

And I won't hold you, it was HARD!

But, the result was, and is, the greatest milestone of my work as an educator and advocate for public education. And now, I've transitioned to being a thought-partner and coach alongside other school and executive leaders who are equally determined to radically transform their school and organizational climates.
